ILB "Glanely" (RNLI code B-861)
Appledore RNLI's newest inshore lifeboat is the Atlantic85-class Rib B-861 "GLANELY". The Atlantic 85 is the third generation B Class Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) developed from the Atlantic 21 and the later Atlantic 75. The Atlantic class of lifeboats is named after the Atlantic College where where the design was originally developed.
The hull is constructed of Fibre Reinforced Composite with a Hypalon tube. Like previous RIBs it has a manually operated self-righting mechanism, deploying an airbag mounted atop the A-frame arch. It is capable of being beached in an emergency without sustaining damage to engines or steering gear.
The Atlantic 85 is fitted with radar and VHF direction finding equipment and can be operated safely in daylight in a force 6/7 and at night in a force 5/6 gale. The Atlantic 85 also has intercom communications between the crew and VHF radio via their helmets.
The RNLI's internal numbering system for Atlantic85's begins with 801 (the prototype was number 800). With a crew of four, and two inversion-proof 115hp petrol engines, the lifeboat is capable of speeds in excess of 35 knots, and is fitted with a manually operated righting system which, combined with her inversion proofed engines, allows her to remain operational even after capsize.
