RNLI Appledore Guild fundraising event 2021

The first two months of the year have seen our fundraising total at only 1/3rd of that achieved in 2020, and with the Coronavirus lockdown, events are necessarily being compressed into the second half of the year.

It has also been necessary to try out some activities that we have not tried before, to capture the public's imagination at a time when all charities will necessarily be doubling their efforts to capture the funds that were not forthcoming during lockdown.

So, our programme at present looks like this:

April

"Pedal for Appledore RNLI" - between 2nd and 30th April

Sponsored Bike ride, on the roads or at home or the gym. Accumulate mileage by pedalling day to day, seeking sponsors to support your efforts. Phone Pat Hughes on 01271 346560 for details and registration

May

"Families Walk" -  Sunday 30th May - between 10am and 4pm

Family members, plus dogs, encouraged to complete a number of laps around the paths in  Victoria Park, Bideford. There are two separate loops - one of 800 mtrs and the other shorter one at 350 mtrs. Laps done will be counted/recorded by Marshalls. Walkers must pre-register, and will seek sponsorship based on the number of laps done. For details, contact David de Burton on 07763 467489 or by email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

July onwards

Christmas Raffle - to be drawn at the Carol Concert on 5th December

July

"Boat Pull" - Saturday 24th July

The event is still based on 20 mixed teams of 6 (minimum of one female per team but all female teams would be welcome as well) pulling a RS Feva dinghy tied to a launching trolley and racing over a fixed distance around a flag and returning to the start line (approx 100m overall) racing in pairs in a knockout competition. The two boats loaned by NDYC for the day with a road trailer to deliver them to Westward Ho!

July/August

"Treasure Hunts" from Saturday 24th July to Monday 30th August

Following the success of the walking Treasure Hunt in Appledore last year, we will be expanding this event to three separate Treasure Hunts in 2021. These will be at Westward Ho!, Instow and Appledore and will follow the same format as the 2020 event, with two separate sets of questions - one for Adults and one for Youngsters - following the same circular route so that families can do the walk together.

There will no charge for obtaining the Treasure Hunt question sheets, but people will be encouraged to donate to the RNLI at the outlet managing the issue and return of the Question sheets. For further details, contact John Wilson on 01271 860918 or by email at                     This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

August

"Tea at Tapeley" - Saturday 21st August

Wouldn't it be nice, to sit on the lawn at Tapeley House, enjoying a cream tea, and being entertained!? A pleasure denied us in 2020, but one to look forward to again this year. Tickets will be limited, so watch the press for confirmation of the date, and for contact details.

September

"Station to Station" Sponsored Walk - Saturday 11th September

This is our usual annual 16 mile walk from RNLI Clovelly to RNLI Appledore, 16 miles along the South West Coastal Path. In 2019 we had 42 walkers, and in 2020 there were 72 people taking part (and a few dogs!). We would love to reach a target of 100 walkers for the 2021 event, given the increased number of people who have taken up walking during lockdown. For an information pack, contact John Wilson on 01271 860918 or by email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

October

"Fish Suppers" - between Saturday 2nd and Saturday 16th October

Local pubs, restaurants, Cafes and Fish & Chip shops to nominate a dish whose purchase will include a donation of £1.00 for the RNLI. Donation buckets will also be available at these sites. Watch the local press for a list of venues taking part. For more details, contact Pat Hughes on 01271 346560

"Art Exhibition" - between Thu 21st and Sunday 24th October

Our annual exhibition of paintings, sculptures, jewellery and ceramics by local North Devon artists. This will be held at the North Devon Yacht Club, Instow where there is plenty of parking. You can purchase the items displayed. For further information, please contact Lesley Cornish by email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Concert and Auction - Thursday 28th October at 7pm

Our annual celebration in song with Ian Hudson & The Acorns at North Devon Yacht Club. This fun evening will include an auction of items for RNLI funds, and a supper. The bar will be open! Come along for a joyous night. For further details, or to purchase tickets, contact Pat Hughes on 01271 346560

November

"Quiz and Supper" - Friday 19th October 7pm start

To be held at Appledore Community Hall. Teams of up to 6 people.

December

"Carol Concert" at Appledore Lifeboat Station Sunday 5th December

This ever popular event will be held between 2pm and 4pm in the boathouse at RNLI Appledore. We are expecting a good turnout, with voices raised, to make up for having had to miss this event in 2020.

"Motown Christmas Party" - Saturday 11th December 7pm start

What a way to start enjoying the run up to Christmas! An evening of dance and fun at St Mary's Church Hall, Appledore. Music will be provided by a DJ. Tickets will be £10 a head, which may include a Pizza supper (details still being worked out).
