28th June ILB launched to search the River Torridge for a missing female, casualty soon located by others soon after launching.

27th June ILB launched to a 24ft yacht with 2 pob, suffering engine failure outside Bideford Bar, yachts crew did not want to sail in the river as unsure of the area, so the ILB towed them to the Quay for repairs.

25th June ILB launched following a report of a female in the water at Bideford, while arriving on scene it was confirmed the female had been recovered from the water, the ILB crew got confirmation from the local CG team, when the casualty collapsed, she was given aid by the crew until arrival of paramedics.

22nd June ILB launched to a report of 2 persons caught in a RIP Tide off Saunton beach, while en-route it was confirmed that other surfers had helped the casualties ashore, but there may be 4 others in difficulties. On arrival the area was searched with no others thought to be in trouble, ILB returned to station.

1st June ILB launched to a person caught in the tide off the Pulley's. Casualty recovered from the water and brought back to the station for medical treatment by paramedics.

25th may ILB was launched following a report of a bike found at the foot of cliff at Cornbrough beach westward Ho, One crew member went ashore and searched the area for a possible casualty. With nothing found the ILB was stood down.

20th May Within minutes of recovering the ILB was launched again to a female in the water in difficulties at Puttsbrough, but the female was recovered from the water by others while the lifeboat was nearing the scene, the ILB was stood down when confirmed all was safe and well.

9th May ILB launched to a paddle board and kayak in difficulties off Baggy Point. When ILB arrived on scene the casualties had swam ashore with the paddle board and let the kayak to drift. ILB recovered the kayak and paddle board and returned them to the owners who had scrambled up the rocks to Coastguards.

Appledore ILB was launched to assist an 18ft motor sailing vessel that had ran aground in the South Tail. The ILB towed the casualty clear and towed it up the river a short distance. The motor sailer then restarted her engine and continued up river to her moorings escorted by the ILB.

Appledore ILB was requested to launch to a report of a vessel drifting down the river Torridge and unable to restart its engine. When the ILB arrived on scene they found a small cabin cruiser at anchor with 2 POB fishing. They were in no difficulty and required no assistance, and were waiting for the tide to come to return back to Bideford. The ILB then returned to station and was made ready for service.

Swansea CG requested the launch of Appledore All-Weather Lifeboat to recover a drifting fishing vessel the 'Emily Rose' reported 4 miles South of Lundy Island, drifting eastwards. ALB launched and towed the vessel to Appledore Quay.

The ILB was requested to launch to assist the motor sailerApproaching motor-yacht Gwendoline. 'Gwendoline' which had suffered engine failure off Hartland Point. In conjunction with the Coastguard and DLa the launch was kept on standby as there was insufficient water for the Lifeboat to launch due to big spring tides. This was discussed with the owner of the Gwendoline who was happy to sail towards the fairway bouy. When there was enough water, the lifeboat launched to the yacht and was towed to Appledore Quay.

Swansea CG requested the launch of Appledore ILB to a report of a drifting yacht near to the Lifeboat moorings. When the ILB arrived on scene they checked nobody was onboard. It was discovered that the yacht had broken its moorings. The ILB took the yacht in tow and placed it on the RNLI reserve mooring.

Swansea Coastguard requested the launch of Appledore ILB to investigate a drifting boat near Bideford Old Bridge in order to establish that there was nobody else on board as one person had made his own way to shore. ILB arrived on scene and after ensuring that there was nobody in danger, took the small tender back to the lifeboat station for the owner to collect.

Attended scene to find boat on fore and aft mooring awaiting arrival of Instow Marine who were working on the boat. ILB was stood down and returned to exercise.

Appledore ILB launched to assist a local yacht club who were experiencing difficulties in the estuary when a squall raced down the river. The clubs own safety boats were having trouble coping with the weather so the ILB assisted 2 dinghys taking them to safety and 8 persons.

Appledore ALB and ILB launched to report of red flares on Bideford Bar. The ILB located casualty on South Tail, took 2 people on board and took vessel under tow. Tow was then passed to ALB at 20:59 until clear of broken water on the Tail. Tow taken back by ILB when clear of 'The Bar' and taken with casualties to Appledore at 21:51.

Appledore ILB was launched to assist a 15' speed boat with engine failure anchored off Crow Point, Appledore. As the ILB left slipway it was reported that a passing boat had offered assistance, but was too late to abort the launch.

On arrival at Crow Point the casualty could not be found, it was seen near the Royal George Pub at Appledore from where it was towed to Churchfields car park.

Appledore ILB was launched to assist police and coastguards in the search for a missing 83 year old resident of a waterfront house. ILB crew requested help of ALB due to the darkness and the high tide. Both boats searched up river Torridge to Bideford. At 23:48 a report of a woman in a night dress in Appledore was received. Both boats concluded search of river at 00:16hrs upon receipt of information that the woman had been found by Coastguards and they both stood down.

Swansea Coastguard requested launch of Appledore ILB to an 18ft motor boat with 1 person on board who had suffered mechanical failure between the pulley bouys. The ILB launched and passed a tow line. The vessel was then towed to Curchfields car park from where she had been launched.

Appledore Lifeboat was launched to fishing vessel 'Bruno of Sutton' who had ran aground
on the East side of Lundy Island. The 3 crew members on-board had been removed by a RIB from the 'Pride Of Bristol' who was in the area at the time and was requested to assist.

RAF helicopter 169 from RNB Chivenor was tasked with a pump to ensure the vessel was not taking on water. When the Lifeboat arrived on scene, the 3 crew members of the 'Bruno' were taken ashore and handed over to members of Lundy Coustguard where they were given accomodation. The lifeboat then took up a mooring and waited for the tide to rise enough to re-float the vessel (some 3 hours!)

At appoximately 07:00, 3 crew memebers were transferred back to the vessel to inspect it for water tight integrity. The vessel was then towed off the rocks and a pump from the Tyne Class lifeboat placed on board to help pump out water that had had entered the boat. After an inspection by the boats crew their engines were restarted and the boat was escorted back to
Appledore, arriving at 1000 hrs.

Appledore Tyne class Lifeboat 'George Gibson' was launched to assist a 10 metre commercial angling boat 'Lundy Murrelet' who had suffered machinery failure at Lundy island, ( approx 20 miles west of Appledore) The lifeboat launched and arrived on scene, a tow line was passed and the casualty was towed to Clovelly harbour. The lifeboat then returned to station and was ready for service at 2120hrs.

Appledore ILB was launched after a request from Swansea CG to assist 2 people cut off by the tide on rocks off Puttsborough beach. The youths were quickly located, retrieved from rocks where they were then transferred to Puttsborough beach. The ILB then returned to station and made ready for next call.

A request to launch Appledore ILB was received from Swansea Coastguard as 4 teeneagers were noted to be cut off by the rising tide near Rocks Nose (South End of Westward Ho!)

When the ILB arrived on scene they had to put 1 man in the water to swim ashore with a line, as 2 of the casualties were non-swimmers. The ILB was taken over rocks in 1-1.5 meter surf, 2 propellors were damaged but all 4 persons were brought aboard the ILB and brought back to the Lifeboat Station and asfety - where they were made warm & given a health checked. Had the ILB had been called 5 minutes later, the casualties could of been swept out to the sea or seriously injured by the surf and rocks.

Swansea CG requested the launch of Appledore ILB after a report of a yacht capsized in the Croyde Bay area. The ILB launched and proceeded to a yacht, 1 Nautical Mile North West of the Fairway Bouy, a Beach Lifeguard Rescue Water Craft was also in attendance. After speaking to the occupants it was determined that all was well on board and they
had not capsized. The ILB continued to search the area for any vessels fitting the description with nothing untoward found. The ILB was stood down after just over 1 hour and returned to station. This was treated as a false call with good intent.

Swansea Coastguard requested launch of Appledore Atlantic 75 to investigate report of a dinghy adrift off Saunton Sands Hotel. When they arrived on scene the dinghy (a small RIB) was ashore. The 2 occupants who had been surfing in the area had apparently anchored the vessel while they went surfing and subsequently recovered it.

Request from Swansea CG to launch Appledore Atlantic 75 Douglas Paley to assist a kayak attempting to beach at Saunton Sands. ILB launched but kayak occupant had swam ashore unaided. Attempts to recover kayak abandoned as risk to ILB and crew were considered unnecessary. Kayak subsequently drifted on to rocks at Saunton, ILB returned to station.

Swansea Coastguard requested the launch of Appledore ILB to a report of people possibly cut off by the tide at the bottom of cliffs near the Shipyard, as 2 dogs had been found., (1 on the footpath and 1 at the bottom of the cliff). The ILB put ashore 1 crewmember who searched the area and found no-one. The 2 dogs were recovered to the ILB and brought to the station. It later emerged that the dogs had escaped from a near-by garden and the owners were safe and well. They later came to the station to recover the dogs.

Swansea CG requested launch of Appledore ILB to a report from Croyde CG mobile that they had spotted 2 people in the water between Instow and Crow Point. When the ILB arrived on scene they found 2 persons in the water holding on to 1 lifejacket, and then spotted a small speed boat towing a kneel board with 1 person on.

The ILB crew spoke to the person in the boat which could only take 1 person so the others were put into the water to wait their turn! After a brief chat with the people, informing them that the emergency services were out to assist them they were returned to the shore to waiting coastguards.

Swansea CG requested the launch of Appledore ILB to a broken down Yacht between Instow and Crow Point. The yacht had previously been aground for the day on a nearby sand bank, and coastguards were watching the vessel float on the next incoming tide when its engine failed. When the owner tried unsucessfuly to re-start his engine he anchored his yacht and called for assistance. The ILB placed a crewmember on board and towed the yacht to Instow Quay.

Swansea costguard requested launch of Appledore Inshore Lifeboat to a report of 1, possibly 2 jet ski in trouble on Bideford bar. When the ILB launched they spotted 2 jet ski heading up river and investigated these. When all was well they proceeded to the bar area to check that there were no more jet skis in the area before returning to station.

Jet skier in the water, clinging onto jet ski and shouting for help. ILB launched and when they arrived on scene another party had got there and gave assistance. ILB
left casualty as it was back functioning on own power and had left site. Apparently the jet ski had a reserve tank of fuel!!

Launched to a Fishing Vessel who had broken down on the bar at Appledore, Tyne Class Lifeboat launched and proceeded to scene. When contact was made with the vessel on VHF radio they informed that they had got their engine started again but were still not happy with it and were returning to the Fish Quay at Appledore. Lifeboat escorted vessel to Fish Quay and returned to station.

Due to state of tide Appledore Boarding Boat was launched to assist 6 people cut off by the tide at Fremington Quay. As boarding boat neared the area, the first informant (an angler) advised the Coastguard that the casualties had waded to shore at Penhill Point.

After confirming that all casualties were safe and well the boarding boat stood down and returned to station.

Small dinghy with 4 POB overdue from Iron Bridge in river Torridge, Appledore Boarding boat and Rescue Helicopter 169 were tasked. Boarding boat arrived on scene and did a quick search of the river. People on board had made it to shore without help. All safe and well.

Vessel reported lost in Bideford Bay after returning from Hartland. Tyne Class All Weather Lifeboat launched after request from Swansea CG to investigate a vessel unsure of it's position. Vessel Neptune was standing by the casualty.

VHF direction finder was used to get accurate bearing from Lifeboat then an exact position was gained via Neptune to pin point the casualty, which was off Morte Point, approx 8 miles North of Lifeboat station.

Once the Lifeboat arrived on scene a crew member was placed on board the casualty to help steer her back to Appledore, with the Lifeboat escorting. The crew memeber was taken off the casualty at Appledore and the vessel continued up river to her moorings at Bideford.

Appledore RNLI’s Atlantic 75 lifeboat launched at 0825 hrs on Tuesday May 1st 2007 following reports of a small dinghy adrift in Bideford Bay.

Swansea Coastguard received a report from a passing vessel that a small dinghy had been spotted drifting out into Bideford Bay.The Atlantic 75, Douglas Paley was launched and proceeded to the area to search for the dinghy, which was found with nobody onboard and a painter line attached.The ILB then recovered the dinghy and returned to station, checking the area on their way back.

Appledore's Inshore lifeboat launched following a request from the Beach Lifeguards to two surfers possibly in difficulties off Bideford Bar. When the ILB arrived on scene, the surfers told the crew they did not require any assistance. The surfers made their own way ashore and the ILB returned to station. A false alarm but with good intent.

Both boats searched from the New Bridge up as far as the old Railway Bridge - approximately 1.5 nautical miles up stream of the Taw Bridge. Whilst the ILB was on service it was noticed that a canoe in swamped condition was floating past the station. Boarding boat was launched to investigate, and when the water was drained from the canoe Swansea CG were notified that they were going to do a quick search of the river. The casualty that the ILB was towing at the time called to say that the canoe belonged to one of the people onboard their vessel and that it had come adrift and drifted into the river. Once this was confirmed the boarding boat returned to station.

Swansea CG requested the launch of ALB to the fishing vessel Pacemaker Click here for Gallerywith a fouled propellor 21 miles North of Hartland Point. Once on scene the ALB passed a tow rope, due to the state of tide, the coxswain decided to tow the vessel to Ilfracombe rather than Appledore. It was also decided to launch Ilfracombe Lifeboat to assist towing the vessel into Ilfracombe harbour due the the swell running at the time. Once the vessel was safely alongside the ALB returned to Appledore and was ready for service at 2115hrs.

An Appledore lifeboat crew member spotted a windsurfer in difficulties near the lifeboat station and alerted the coastguard. Whilst on exercise in Croyde Bay, the crew of the ILB were approached by surfers as one of their group had susstained a blow to the head. The ILB crew reported the incident to Swansea CG who called for Croyde CRT and paramedics. The ILB stood offshore on the surf-line and relayed the message to the surfers that assistance was on its way. Once the Coastguards arrived on scene the ILB continued with its exercise.

The ILB was launched to a vessel adrift between Appledore and Instow. As the ILB was launching it became apparent that the owner had tried tro swim out to his vessel and was in difficulty. The ILB arrived on scene and pulled the man from the water, once it was confirmed that he was fit and well, the ILB recovered his boat and towed it to a nearby mooring.

The owner was landed ashore near his car and clothing and handed over to waiting coastguards. The ILB then returned to station.

Swansea CG requested the launch of ILB following a 999 call from a small dory with 2 persons onboard, aground in surf off of Airy Point. The vessel had tried to come over the bar early and outside the main channel, the vseel had hit a sandbank and theengine stalled. Once aground and in broken water the vessel took a couple of waves aboard and filled with water, the persons onboard the vessel could not start the main or auxilliary engines so called for help.

The ILB manouvered in the shallows and put one crewmember in the water to board the vessel with a tow rope.

The boardingboat was also launch to assist from shore side but was not needed. Once the tow was secured the vessel was towed from the surf and into deep water, then back to Appledore, Churchfields carpark for recovery.

The ILB Launched whilst going on Exercise to a report of 2 surfers in difficulties off Baggy Point. When the ILB approached the area, they were called inshore by the coastguard mobile. By then the two surfers had
made it ashore onto rocks. The coastguards climbed down the rocks and confirmed that the casualties were safe and well, and that they required no medical assistance. The ILB was released from the service to continue with its exercise.

When the ILB arrived on scene the children had managed to get ashore, but left the inflatable on the tide line, the crew recovered the dinghy back to station where it was destroyed. The children had quickly disappeared when the Lifeboat arrived.

Appledore's All-waether lifeboat was on exercise when she came across a small power boat which appeared to be in difficulty. The vessel had a rope caught around its prop. The ALB stood by whilst rope was freed and escorted the vessel into the river to ensure all was well. Once this was established the ALB was refueled and made ready for service.

Swansea Coastguard requested the launch of ILB following reports of a small catamaran in difficulties off Fremington Quay, when the ILB arrived on scene they found the yacht had just re-floated off of a sandbank, the
owner confirmed he was fine and required no assistance, the ILB escorted him for a while before returning to station.

Launch of Boarding Boat was requested by Swansea CG following a report of a female in the water near Barnstaple Civic Centre. As the crew were preparing to launch they were stood down, as the person in the water was in fact a male in a drysuit, deploying anchors from his boat and was not in need in assistance. A false call with good intent.

Swansea Cg requested launch of ILB following a report of a person stranded on a sandbank near Crow Point, word had come through that the person had fallen from his boat and had swam to a sandbank. Another
vessel in the area had gone to his aid, once the lifeboat was on scene the crew assessed the casualty, requiring no medical assistance the lifeboat then returned to station.

Swansea CG requested launch of ILB to report of dog in the water near Bideford new bridge. It was also reported that people had got into a small boat to try and rescue the dog. The ILB arrived on scene to find that
the dog had made it to shore. Once it was made clear that the dog and persons where safely ashore the ILB stood down and returned to station.

Appledore's boarding boat was launched to recover a broken down jetski at Old Walls. Jetski was taken in tow to Churchfields slipway and boarding boat then returned to station.

Swansea CG requested launch of ILB to an angling boat approx 1.5nm NNW of station, when lifeboat arrived on scene they found a 16ft speedboat with 2 persons on board with engine failure, ILB took the vessel in tow to Churchfields slipway and passed over to waiting coastguards.

ILB launched following a report of a jet-ski between Instow and Appledore waving for help. When ILB arrived on scene the jet-ski was under tow by another another vessel, ILB escorted both vessels to Churchfields slipway, once it was certain all was well the ILB returned to station.

Swansea CG requested launch of ALB to assist with a search and provide additional lighting for 1 person in the water at Morwenstow after the helicopter had winched one to safety, after searching for 4 hours without result the lifeboat was stood down and anchored in Clovelly to await the incoming tide, arriving back at station at 0700hrs the following morning.

Swansea CG requested the launch of ALB to 3 surfers in trouble at Barricane beach, Woolacombe. ILB was also launched to assist. Whilst both boats were en-route the Coastguard confirmed that Rescue Helicopter 169 from Chivenor had managed to winch the 3 surfers to safety. Both boats were then stood down and returned to station.

Appledore RNLI's boarding boat launched to convey 2 police officers to a boat near to Instow Beach following a report from police of lights onboard. Once on scene they found a vessel at anchor with 4 persons on board fishing. Once police had all the details and had made sure all was well they returned to station. A false call with good intent.

Swansea CG requested the launch of Appledore Boarding Boat to a female in the water near Bideford Old Bridge. When the lifeboat arrived on scene, 2 police officers had managed to find a small inflatable and paddled out to the woman to keep her afloat until the lifeboat arrived. The asualty was taken in the boarding boat and handed over to waiting paramedics on the shore.

ILB was launched following a report of a potential suicide threat on Torridge Bridge. Once the boat was on scene the police persuaded the person down from the bridge and was taken into police custody. The ILB then returned to station.

Boarding boat was launched following a request from Swansea CG after a report of 2 persons in a Rowing Skiff who had become pinned against the higher side of Bideford Old Bridge by the tide. Two police men on patrol were trying to help the men by pulling the bow of the boat round but to no avail. When the boarding boat had gone through the arch of the bridge, the wash created was enough to dislodge the vessel. The boarding boat took the rope from the police and assisted the vessel, before escorting it back to Bideford Quay.

The ILB was requested to launch to investigate a rowing boat off Bideford Quay - it was not known if occupants were drunk or thieves. Police requested to be taken on board the ILB to casualties.

The ILB was launched with 3 crew and 2 police officers onboard. It located the boat and 4 youths near Bideford New Bridge - 1 youth was in the water, and another had been in the water. All 4 taken to Bideford Quay and handed over to police and ambulance crew. Boat was retrieved and returned to Pilot boat.

Swansea CG requested launch of ILB to a small fishing boat near to crow point, when the ILB arrived on scene it was found to be a small yacht in very bad condition. The helm was advised by the coxswain to tow the vessel to a mooring behind crow point. This was agreed by the Coastguard, once done the ILB returned to station.

Swansea CG requested the launch of Appledore ILB following a report of 2 people in the water near to Bideford Old Bridge. One person had been rescued by a police officer, when the ILB arrived on scene they quickly spotted the one remaining casualty who was taken onboard the boat and transferred immediately to the shore and handed over to waiting paramedics.

During this time the ALB was preparing to launch but was stood down as they were leaving the moorings.

Swansea CG requested launch to assist a surfer in difficulties off the south end of Saunton Sands. Rescue Helo 169 also in attendance and hovered over casualty until ILB arrived on scene to re-assure casualty that help was en-route. ILB then took casualty who was fit and well but slightly embarrassed to old walls where Coastguards met them to take them ashore.

Swansea CG requested the launch of ILB following a report from the guard room at Zeta Berth, of a small power boat drifting in the river Torridge and considered a danger to shipping. The ILB arrived on scene and towed the vessel to Skern where it was secured to a crew members moorings. The vessel's moorings had came free from the river bed. The ILB then returned to station and was made ready for service.

Under tow.Swansea CG requested the launch of ILB to assist a broken down boat near to the Yelland Power Station Jetty. The vessel had 2 persons on board and was at anchor with engine failure. 27/Nov/2008 1508hrs Tyne-class Lifeeboat

Swansea CG received a radio call from the Tug Cannis on Wednesday evening for conditions and weather at Bideford Bar, Approaching tug CANNISdue to the state of tide it was recommended he did not attempt to cross the Bar and take shelter at Clovelly for the night, which the skipper did. The skipper then made another attempt to cross the Bar on 27/11/2008, when the tug arrived at the Bar the weather had worsened, with increased wind, and decreased visability. The skipper was concerned that he could not see the leading lights, nor the Bar Bouy, the skipper asked for the assisitance of Appledore Lifeboat. All -Weather Lifeboat George Gibson launched, once on scene the ALB guided the Tug into the river, giving him directions via VHF Radio, once safely inside the river she was tied up on Appledore Quay and the ALB returned to station.

15/Nov/2008 1609hrs Boarding Boat BB-060

Boarding boat launched due to lack of water to assist a kite surfer which had been observed in trouble by a local angling vessel. The skipper had seen the kite surfer being blown towards him, so he upped anchor and headed towards him, the person was retrieved from the water and the lifeboat called for. When the ILB arrived on scene the casualty was safe and well with no medical attention required, the casualty was then transferred to the ILB and borought back to the station.

Devon and Cornwall Police reoprted to Swansea CG of an 18ft Motor Cruiser adrift off Chivenor. Boarding boat was launched as that part of the river is very shallow, crew searched the area and found nothing amiss, after a full and extensive search the boarding boat was stood down and returned to station.

While at the station the Coxswain was told by the wife of a crewmember that her husband had been knocked out of his boat by the reserve moorings and that his boat was drifting. The cox paged the ILB immediately, person in the water was wearing a lifejacket and was alongside a large yacht. Once enough crew were at statio the Lifeboat was launched and proceeded to the Pool. Casualty had managed to get himself out of the water and onto the large yacht where he was then transferred to his own boat. ILB came alongside and once it was established all was well the ILB returned to station.

Appledore ILB was launched after Coastguards received a 999 call from the owner of a speedboat to say they had hit a sandbank off Penhill Point and required assistance, with 2 adults and 2 children onboard. When ILB arrived on scene it was noted that the boat was well aground and nothing could be done, a crewmember put an anchor out so the boat would not drift on the next tide, the 4 persons were brought onboard the ILB and brough back to station.

He had gone out in his boat to bale out his speedboat, due to the adverse weather the casualties son was becoming concerned as his father was bailing out the water was coming in just as fast. The ILB took the gentleman off his boat and landed him at Churchfields Slipway to Westward Ho! CRT. ILB then returned to station.

Appledore's ALB was launched to assist the Yacht ‘Owens Boy’ which had gone aground at Airey Point, when the Lifeboat arrived on scene the casualty was well aground. The Boarding Boat was also launched as it was needed to get the casualty as insufficient water for the ALB. The owner of the yacht placed his poles out to act as legs to stop her falling over. Once the owner was happy nothing more could be done both boats were returned to station. The owner stayed onboard the yacht to wait for the next tide.

WDoDo Launch hilst walking to station the LOM observed a boat with possible problems drifting down the estuary, the CG was informed and a self launch initiated. The vessel was drifting with the ebb tide and a strong easterly wind, the casualties were seen to be paddling with no avail, the ILB launched and was alongside in 1min, and towed the casualty to her moorings at Instow.

Swansea Coastguard requested the launch of ALB to assist a 26ft yacht with rigging failure and running low on fuel some 3 miles off Hartland Quay. As the ALB arrived on scene the casualty ran out of fuel. A crewmember was placed onboard the casualty with a VHF radio as the vessels own radio was not working, a tow line was attached and the vessel towed to Appledore.

The ILB was requested to launch to a report of 2 body boarders paddling out around Baggy Point from Croyde Beach but were caught in a rip tide. When units arrived on scene a report came in that the persons had made it out of the rip and were coming ashore at Puttsborough, once this was confirmed and all was well all units were stood down.

Appledore's ILB was launched to a 31ft yacht which had broke free of its moorings at Instow. Once scene the yacht (owned by one of our DLAs!!) was taken in tow. The owner had been notified and was brought to the casualty which was by now under tow, stemming the tide. Once onboard the boat was towed to Appledore Quay where it was secured alongside. The ILB then returned to station.

Our ALB and ILB launched to casualty close to Bideford Bar. The ILB found casualty near to Fairway Buoy with 3 POB suffering from sea sickness and cold. 3 persons transferred to ALB to be warmed whilst ILB went back to casualty to drop anchor. 3 persons onboard ALB were becoming more ill and required transferring to shore as soon as possible, with helicopter in Wales decision was taken to transfer casualties ashore using ILB whilst ALB stayed with vessel.

Due to state of tide the ALB steamed around in bay for 2 hours awaiting the flood tide. The Bar was cleared at 1530hrs and casualty vessel left on moorings near boathouse.

Swansea CG requested launch of ILB to a drifting yacht who’s skipper had swam ashore. ILB launched and recovered yacht from Westward Ho! beach and towed it to Appledore Quay. Skipper had been picked up by Coastguards and brought to boathouse where he was showered and offered dry clothes by the crew. Skipper was taken to vessel at Appledore Quay by CG team to rejoin his vessel.

Swansea CG requested launch of ALB, ILB and Boarding Boat to search for a possible man overboard from a motorboat off Instow Yacht Club. The casualty was found by another yacht with its engine running on its moorings with no-one onboard. All 3 boats searched the area and along the riverbank. Boarding boat crew found the missing person on another yacht, as he had went with them for a sail around the estuary and left his own engine running in order to charge the batteries.

Appledore ALB was requested to launch to motor yacht "Priorty 1" with Engine Failure and lack of wind,some 1.5 miles off Bideford Fairway Buoy. Once the lifeboat arrived on scene and all sails were lowered,the Tow Rope was passed and the vessel was towed back into Appledore and placed on a RNLI Mooring.

Appledore ILB was requested to launch to the Aid of two Kayaks unable to make land due to strong tides. When the ILB Arrived on Scene both Kayaks had managed to make shore,once the ILB crew made sure all was well and details taken the Lifeboat returned to Station.

25/Jul/2008 1920hrs Tyne-class Lifeeboat

Launched at 1920hrsd to the fishing vessel "PACEMAKER", with a fouled propeller 26nm North of Bideford Bar. Tenby Lifeboat was also launched as the fishing vessel was also some 15 miles from Tenby, The fishing vessel came from Bideford, so the Tenby boat Towed the pacemaker towards Appledore. Both lifeboats met up at 2100 and the tow passed over to Appledore, who commenced the long tow home,arriving back at Appledore Station at 0200 the following morning.

Appledore ALB was requested to launch following a 999 call from a yacht unsure of its position, shortly after launching a rescue helicopter located the casualty 2 miles below Hartland Point. The ALB was recalled and Clovelly Lifeboat launched to assist.

Appledore ALB, ILB and Boarding Boat were requested to launch to assist in the search for a missing 61 year old male in a vulnerable state, missing from Appledore. The river was searched from the mouth, up to the Iron Bridge, the Boarding boat searching in boats where ILB and ALB could not reach, and also up past Bideford Long Bridge. The ILB searched from Appledore to Bideford along with the ALB. With the search completed and nothing found, all boats were stood down and returned to station at 2045hrs

Swansea CG requested the launch of Appledore All-Weather Lifeboat to assist the Kathleen & May, a three masted, 30 metre, sail schooner, which had attempted to secure a mooring near the lifeboat station. Her rudder had become fouled on the mooring line. Due to strong tide and lack of draught she was unable to free herself. The boarding boat was also used and the ALB stood by in attendance as a diver was lowered into the water to free the vessel. This was successful and the Kathleen & May successfully moored on the reserve RNLI mooring and sailed at approx 9am the following day.

Down at the head.

Appledore Lifeboat and Appledore ILB were launched to assist 5m powerboat which had taken on water due to adverse weather conditions. The ALB salvage pump was used to pump the excess water from the casualty, Rescue Helicopter 169 was also on scene in case an evacuation was needed.

After pumping out the casualty the boat was escorted back to Appledore where she then made her own way to her moorings at Fremington.

Appledore ALB was requested to launch to assist an 11.5m yacht 'Sea Sense' who had suffered engine failure in Bideford Bay. The lifeboat arrived on scene and towed the yacht back to Appledore where she was able to get her engine re-started and make way under her own power to her moorings at Instow.

Appledore All-weather Lifeboat was launched in dense fog to attend a diving casualty who was suffering from decompression sickness near to Lundy Island. Rescue Helicopter 169 was also tasked. The helicopter arrived on scene first and winched the casualty and his dive buddy, taking them to Plymouth to the decompression chamber, the ALB was then stood down and returned to station.

Appledore ILB and Boarding Boat were requested to launch to assist a female who had jumped from Barnstaple Old Bridge. Paramedics were treating the woman on scene and required assistance to move her from the mud and safely to shore. The ILB was first on scene and took the woman in a stretcher, along with paramedics and transferred casualty and paramedics to the ambulance.

Appledore All-weather Lifeboat was requested to launch to assist a 27m ex Dutch barge which had Arrival on scene by Appledore lifeboat.suffered engine failure in Bideford bay, when the ALB arrived on scene the vessel was at anchor, the anchor was raised and the casualty taken in tow to Appledore. The vessel had suffered mechanical failure after the fuel filters became blocked and no spares were onboard.

When the Lifeboat arrived on scene they found 2 persons had attempted to swim from Instow to Appledore, however opne of the casualties was not a strong swimmer but had managed to climb onboard a motor cruiser. The lifeboat retrieved the 2 youths and landed them at Instow beach to awaiting Coastguards.

Swansea CG requested the launch of Appledore Boarding Boat to assist a small angling boat who had become entangled and ran over its tender. When the Lifeboat arrived on scene the crew released the tender and the boat was anchored in the river until enough tide allowed the boat to return to her moorings after a quick check to make sure the propulsion systems were working fine.

Appledore Casualty alongside.All-weather Lifeboat was launched to attend to a crewmember of the m.v. Lady of Rudding who had suffered broken ribs after a collision at sea with another vessel. The motor yacht and a small tug are thought to have collided with each other about 15 miles (24km) off Tintagel in thick fog. The conditions were considered by the Coastguard to be too dangerous to use a rescue helicopter.

The injured crewmember was taken onboard the lifeboat and treated by the Lifeboat Doctor (LMA), then passed to paramedics on shore. The vessel was sea-worthy enough to continue in to Appledore where she was moored with help of Lifeboat crewmembers.

The Inshore lifeboat was requested to launch to a report of a surfer in difficulties off Croyde beach. The surfers board had snapped in half and he was no longer visible according to the first informant. As the ILB was preparing to launch the surfer managed to swim ashore and the ILb was stood down once the surfer was identified as being the person in trouble.

Both Appledore's Inshore Lifeboat and its Boarding boat launched in response to a red flare sighted by various members of the public including a crew member. Both boats used white parachute flares to illuminate the area and search the river from the shipyard to the Lifeboat station without success. A shore search was also carried out by lifeboat crew and coastguards with nothing found. All units were then stood down at 2220hrs with nothing found.

Appledore RNLI boarding boat launched to a report of a person in the water near to Appledore shipyard, calling for help. A person was recovered from water suffering from the effects of cold, and shock. This survivor and handed over to paramedics who took him to hospital.

It was later found that the person had been playing in an old boat on the shoreline and the ebbing tide had caught the boat and took him into the middle of the estuary, it then came to rest on a sandbank in the middle of the river. He attempted to swim to try and reach the shore. The message is WAIT FOR HELP.

Appledore lifeboat was requested to launch by Swansea Coastguard following a report of a possible
body in the water near Castle Quay, Barnstaple. An off duty paramedic had called and said he was following it along the river bank. When the Boarding Boat arrived on scene the body was found to be 2 large bags of waste. The boarding boat collected the bags and returned to station. A false call with good intent.

Station took a phone call from the coastguards, saying a dog was in difficulties 1/2 a mile off puttsborough Beach, and that a male was going to attempt to swim out to it, as crew were changing another call was taken that the animal had made shore safe and well and stand boat down.

Launched to a male cut off by the tide on Zulu Bank, as the ILB made its was the casualty was observed by the station as being chest deep in the gut making his way ashore, as the ILB arrived in the area the casualty made shore safe and well. so the ILB returned to station.

Whilst performing routine training on the all-weather lifeboat on its moorings, the boathouse called to say a kite surfer was in difficulties astern of the Boat at approx 1/2nm distance. The boarding-boat picked up a Kite surfer and landed her ashore safe and well near by, before resuming training on the all weather boat.

Appledore's ILB launched to a paddle-boarder possibly in difficulties off Baggy Point. Rescue helicopter R-169 overflew the area and reported that the boarder appeared to be without difficulty. The ILB continued to the scene to confirm the initial report. As darkness was closing in, the crewman aboard the boarder took advice from the crew and a lift ashore.
